School Awards
The Harold H. Bair American Legion Auxiliary Unit #14 has for many years sponsored a very special event on the last Monday of each April. This year was no exception. Nine local schools were asked to select an outstanding and an honorable mention male and female student from the Eighth Grade student body. The schools were asked to select these four students based on the following criteria: honor, scholarship, service, Americanism, leadership, and courage. The nine schools were: Annunciation B.V.M. School, Emory H. Markle Intermediate School, Hanover Middle School, Immaculate Conception School, New Oxford Middle School, Sacred Heart School, Saint Joseph School, Saint Vincent de Paul School, and Spring Grove Middle School. This year the speaker was Reverend Patricia Leader, Pastor of Emmanuel United Church of Christ. Teresa Etzler, Unit #14 Acting Aamericanism Chairman and Leroy Zellers, Post #14 Americanism Chairman presented the 8th Grade Awards to the girls and boys. At the ceremony, five winners of the Auxiliary Americanism Essay read their essays and were presented with framed certificates and $50 saving bonds. Approximately 200 family members, teachers and friends attended the program honoring some of the outstanding youth in the Hanover and surrounding areas.
